Vélez-Málaga

Velez-Málaga is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga and is the most important town in the region of La Axarquía. It is located 37 kilometres from the centre of Málaga. With 82,365 inhabitants according to the 2020 census, Velez-Málaga is the third largest municipality in the province in terms of population. The population is dispersed in several urban centres, numerous coastal developments and farmhouses in the interior.

Tourism is the main productive sector in the municipality, followed by agriculture, which is notable for the production of subtropical crops, especially avocado, of which it is the largest producer in Spain. Furthermore, the port of Caleta de Vélez is home to the largest fishing fleet in the province.

The sea, the orography and the geographical situation of the basin of the river Vélez-Málaga determine the microclimate of the municipality, characterised by its mild temperatures, with an average of 64°F (18°C) and some 2935 hours of sunshine per year.

This town with Arabic roots is the most important urban centre in the region. The historic centre has been declared a historic-artistic site. The municipality covers 25 km of coastline, with a total of nine beaches of different types, ranging from dark sandy beaches with moderate waves and semi-urban character, to isolated beaches that are less frequented.

Other great attractions of Vélez-Málaga are its cultural events, its flamenco festival, its popular fiestas and its gastronomy. A must try is the typical "pescaíto frito" (fried fish).
