La Axarquía
La Axarquía is one of the nine districts in the province of Málaga, in the autonomous region of Andalusia. Geographically, the district is located in the easternmost part of the province of Malaga, from which it derives its name (Axarquía is an Arabic word that refers to the eastern location of a place). La Axarquía extends along the coast and inland. Its coastal municipalities make up the Eastern Costa del Sol.
Some say that this region is like a small Málaga as it encloses in its vast territory mountains, valleys and coast. In any case, it has the largest number of municipalities of all the districts in Málaga.
La Axarquía is made up of 31 municipalities, of which Nerja, Velez-Málaga, Rincón de la Victoria and Torrox are the most important.
It is very well connected by road, as the A7 Mediterranean motorway runs through its territory. The nearest airports are those of Málaga and Granada, and there is also the Aerodrome of La Axarquía.
